About these works
Most of the group are oils on board, the format Hansen often used for direct, rapidly painted studies of boats and weather. Men of the Sea, catalogued about 1920–22, shows the fishermen themselves, the subject that defines his best work, and The Helmsmen and Fishermen in the Rain continue the theme. Drydock and At Rest, both of the later 1920s, turn to boats out of the water and at anchor, while Storm, Boats at Sea and Dusk at Sea are pure marines.
Castroville Slough, Winter Morning and Rodeo Scene are reminders that Hansen also painted the farmland and ranch country inland from Monterey Bay.
